Weston Junior Striders
Weston, Florida
THE TEAM
We will accept up to 55 members, from the ages of 8 to 14. The youngest age group, called Bantams, is for those born in 2000 and 2001. We are limiting this age group to 12 members. The next two age groups (1998 & 99 and 96 & 97) usually have about 20 kids each. We also accept those born in 1994 & 95.
We also have members of the Cypress Bay High School track team helping us. They bring a lot of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm to the group.
TRACK MEETS
The track meet season is in full swing. A good group of 21 athletes participated in a youth track meet on March 27th (Flanagan High School). Over 1,000 young athletes came from all over South Florida to compete. SoFlo is a hot bed for sprinters and field event specialists, some who have gone on to national and international fame. It was encouraging to see so many Junior Striders eager to take on the challenge of a major competition.
The next meet will be the intra-squad meet at Cypress Bay High School, April 10th, where we will have a fun meet within the group to compete against our own personal bests.
The cost is $40 per month. Everyone is welcome to try two practices before paying for the month. February payment will be due one week after the starting date for those who decide to stay in the program. After that, payments are due at the beginning of each month (March, April and May). There is no discount for siblings. We normally reach capacity within a few weeks, so please consider carefully that you'll be able to make most practices and some meets before taking a spot.
Registration forms will be available in mid January. Contact me for one in advance, otherwise they will be available at the first practice.
OTHER EVENTS
There are several other track events that happen throughout the season, including he USATF and AAU Jr. Olympic series. The local qualifier is usually held at Tropical Park in Miami in the middle of May. The regional meets, for those who advance, are held in June and the location varies. Membership in USATF or AAU is required to participate in the Junior Olympic series and does require proof of age and costs about $20. This can be done online at www.usatf.org
5k races take place nearly every weekend around South Florida. You can find a listing of most events by checking Split Second Timing at www.splitsecondtiming.com or the Greater Fort Lauderdale Road Runner's Club at www.gflrrc.org . Some events also include shorter runs for younger children.
